Learn About Your Vehicle's Brake Pads

Your vehicle's braking system is equipped with a number of components, which include brake pads. Brake pads work by applying friction and pressure to the rotors so that the vehicle will slow down and stop when you engage the brake pedal. All vehicles will need to have the brake pads replaced on a regular basis because the stress they are put through will cause them to wear down.

It is better to use name brand brake pads because they are typically manufactured under the FMSI brake standard. You should also choose brake pads that come with factory style shims.

How often should your brake pads be replaced? This depends on what the manufacturer of you vehicle suggests. For most cars, brake pads will need to be replaced every 50,000 miles, but there are some vehicles that need to have them replaced every 25,000 miles and some every 70,000 miles. The next time that you have your oil changed, ask your service technician to inspect the thickness of the brake pads to see if they need to be changed.
